Retainers

Custom orthodontic retainers can help maintain straight teeth after braces. It is common for teeth to shift back to their previous positions once braces are removed, but retainers can help hold teeth in the proper place, preventing relapse. Retainers may be prescribed to be worn at night and/or at times during the day depending upon the degree of reinforcement needed to preserve the smile. As time goes on, you may become less dependent upon the retainers, but it may be advisable to continue them for occasional nighttime use.

Night Guards

Nighttime teeth clenching and grinding can place enormous amounts of destructive force and friction on the teeth, gums, and jaw. Extreme clenching and grinding can result in:

  • Worn, cracked or broken teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Tooth and jaw pain

For patients experiencing these symptoms, Dr. Keckley can create a custom night guard that stabilizes the bite and prevents clenching and grinding from occurring. Night guards are designed to be comfortable to wear, and patients typically notice a reduction in pain and a sounder night’s sleep soon after starting to wear the device.

Lingual Bars

A lingual bar is a fixed metal wire that spans the back side of the frontal lower teeth. Lingual bars are typically placed after braces are removed to hold the straightened teeth in place, much like a permanent retainer. Depending on the technique being used, the bar can be cemented directly to the teeth or attached to bands which are cemented around back teeth.
